Separate the bean from the oil-extraction product
Ask the producer to identify the actual material before matching it to a purchase request.
- Whole soybeans: the soybean seeds, rather than the material remaining after oil extraction.
- Soy expeller cake: the solid product remaining after mechanical pressing removes oil from the beans.
- Soybean meal: an oil-extraction coproduct whose actual production route must be confirmed. Cake and meal names can overlap in commercial use, so record the process instead of relying on the label.
Record oil removal separately from physical form
A full-fat soybean product is made without extracting the oil, but full-fat does not mean raw or completely unprocessed. Grinding describes physical form; a powder can come from an unextracted product or from an oil-extraction product.
- Ask separately: has oil been extracted, and is the material whole, broken, ground, flaked or in another stated form?
- Record whether the supplied material is raw or processed, and request the producer's process description. Do not infer oil removal or processing history from a photograph or the word powder.
Replace a generic soy name with a producer-confirmed identity
Keep the supplier's original product name beside a clear description of the material, oil-removal status, production route and supplied form. Use the same confirmed identity when reviewing the quotation, technical sheet and lot documents.
- Request the producer name, product code where available, current technical sheet and a statement of the process used. Mark oil removal as confirmed yes, confirmed no or awaiting clarification.
- When document names differ, ask the supplier for a written mapping to the actual product and lot. Keep evidence for each distinct material identifiable rather than carrying one product's report across to another.
Keep different materials on separate quotation rows
For organic soy expeller cake or soybean meal sourcing, send our MUSE team your required material and any alternative quotation that needs clarification through the contact options below. We can organise the producer questions before you compare prices.
- Use this row: supplier product name | producer and product reference | material identity | oil removed: yes, no or unconfirmed | production route | physical form | raw or processed | technical-sheet reference | offered lot and COA | unresolved question.
- If the supplier proposes a different material, ask whether it is an alternative offer or a correction to the original product description. Keep the original requirement and the supplier's confirmation together.
Buyer questions
What is the difference between soybeans and soybean meal?
Soybeans are the seeds. Extracted soybean meal is a product of soybean oil removal. Confirm the actual process and supplied form before treating their quotations as comparable product offers.
Is ground full-fat soy the same as extracted soybean meal?
No. Ground describes form, while full-fat identifies a product made without oil extraction. Ask the producer to confirm those details rather than merging it into an extracted-meal quotation.
Does full-fat mean raw soybeans?
No. Full-fat soybean products may have been processed. Ask for the supplied material's processing description and physical form; the name alone does not establish either.
