Replacing soybean meal with organic soy expeller cake: nutrition review

Before replacing the soybean meal in your current formula with organic soy expeller cake, give your nutritionist a matched comparison of the two materials. Send our MUSE team the producer sheets, lot analyses and the supplier questions your nutritionist needs answered.

MUSE sourcing team
01

Define the reference material and the intended use

Name the soybean material currently used and the proposed replacement. Record the target animal, production stage and formula version with your nutrition team. Identify the ingredient requirements that the proposed lot must meet.

  • Keep the current approved nutrient inputs and their document references beside the proposed material's data.
  • Mark each proposed input as supported by the offered lot, accepted from a stated reference, or still awaiting clarification.
02

Resolve process differences before carrying over nutrient inputs

Expeller cake comes from mechanical pressing. Ask whether the offered soybean meal is mechanically pressed or solvent-extracted, and whether the beans are dehulled or hulls are added back. Hull handling can change the composition being compared.

  • Request the producer's process flow, heat-treatment steps and processing-aid details for each material.
  • For every process difference, have your nutritionist name the additional nutrient information or quality evidence needed before reusing the reference inputs.
03

Review residual oil within the whole formula

Mechanical pressing generally leaves more residual oil than solvent extraction. Use the offered lot's measured oil, protein, fibre and moisture together when reviewing the replacement. Confirm a common as-received or dry-matter basis for the nutrient inputs.

  • Have your nutritionist confirm the additional energy and amino-acid inputs needed to update the proposed material's nutrient data, and record their basis.
  • Ask your nutritionist to recalculate the whole formula, including any changes to added oil or other ingredients, before setting the replacement quantity.
04

Close the heat-treatment questions with suitable evidence

Inadequate and excessive heating can both affect nutritive value; excessive heating can reduce lysine availability. Ask your quality team which processing-quality evidence it needs for the intended use.

  • Have the quality team select relevant tests, such as urease activity, trypsin inhibitor activity or protein solubility, with stated methods and agreed criteria.
  • A low urease result alone cannot rule out overheating. Resolve the remaining processing questions before accepting the nutrient inputs.
05

Record the decision and the conditions for another review

Have your nutrition team record the proposed material as accepted for the stated use, accepted with specified formulation conditions, or held pending named evidence. Keep the responsible reviewer, date, lot and specification version with that decision.

  • Reopen the review if the producer, extraction route, hull handling or agreed lot specification changes.
  • Carry the formulation decision alongside the organic, feed-safety and destination document reviews before purchasing.

Buyer questions

Can matching crude protein justify a weight-for-weight substitution?

Have your nutritionist review the actual lot inputs and any additional nutrient data needed, then recalculate the current formula. Matching crude protein alone does not set a replacement quantity.

Does low urease activity complete the heat-treatment review?

Urease alone cannot assess overheating. Ask your quality team to select the additional processing-quality evidence and interpret it using the stated methods and agreed material-specific criteria.

What should I send MUSE when process details are missing?

Send the two producer sheets, lot references and your nutritionist's outstanding questions. We organise supplier clarifications on extraction, hull handling and heat treatment for your team's review.
